In Places to Visit

Costa Rica is a country full of wonderful places to explore and discover. Especially for nature lovers! – The jaw-dropping rainforest, flora and fauna that you can see during you outdoor adventures is just absolutely amazing. And what better place to see the country’s best than to take a lovely bike ride through the Arenal Volcano!

Bike riding through the Arenal Volcano is truly a unique experience! You will get to ride along the beautiful hills, forested slopes and enjoy absolutely amazing views! Located about 10 miles from La Fortuna, the Arenal Volcano is definitely a must when visiting Costa Rica. Although a 4×4 car is not essential, it is highly recommended especially during the rainy season.

There are plenty of bike rides that you can take part on depending on your choice of difficulty and intensity. You can also choose to do either a half-day tour or a full-day tour. Regardless of which way you decide to take, biking through the Arenal volcano will give you a chance to experience the real rural life and the area’s awesome habitants such as toucans, coatis and monkeys.

The half-day tour is quite pleasant as it takes you from an old road which connects the Arenal Dam to the main entrance of the National Park. About half way through the bike ride you may stop at the Arenal Lake for a nice picnic and some chill time. To finish off the trip, you will ride through some dense forests towards the El Castillo village. This trip is extremely nice as you can actually see the active volcano all throughout it.

If you are feeling adventurous and are up for a longer bike ride, you can try the full day tour. This bike ride also starts at the Arenal Dam and continues along a road on the north side of the Lake. There is very little traffic there so bikers don’t have to worry about any safety issues. Although this is a much longer bike ride, it is extremely relaxing and it allows you to reconnect with nature.

If you are planning to head to the Arenal Volcano, make sure you bring biking clothes, comfortable shoes, lots of sunscreen and a fully charged phone with a great camera.

And if you want to make it the most perfect trip, grab some lunch on your way back at any of the typical Costa Rican restaurants. We promise you will have the most delicious meal while enjoying some of the most impressive scenic views!
